"Common Threads" Exhibit

The Charlevoix Public Library is hosting the Northern Michigan Textile Artists' exhibit "Common Threads" through October 31, 2010. The group was founded in November 2007 in response to interest created by the Michigan Quilt Artists Invitational Show at the library. Composed of fiber and mixed-media artists from Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan and Emmet counties, the group meets monthly at the Charlevoix Library. Meetings include discussion of artistic and professional issue. demonstrations of techniques, informal critique sessions.

SAQA members Kerry Bowes, Gera Witte from Elk Rapids and Kathie Briggs from Charlevoix are members of the group. The show features small works created during the past two years: a series of color studies, photo-inspired pieces and collaborative works.

Kerry's "First Course Series: Blue Bass" is mono-chromatic study and is one of four color studies by Kerry in this series.

Kathie's "45 Degrees North: Still Waters" is an example of a complementary scheme.
Gera's "Ice Blue" is one of her two interpretations of a photograph of ice boats on Torch Lake taken by group member Babs Young.

Kerry, Gera and Kathie collaborated with Betsy Ross Doyle to interpret a photograph of fishing buoys which they have donated to the library.

In addition to the main show, in the gallery between the community rooms and the main library, three dimensional work is featured in the display cases in the Michigan Room. For more information contact Kathie @ kathie@kathiebriggs.com

"Winds of Change" Exhibit

"Winds of Change" an exhibit by the Fiber Artists Coalition, a group of SAQA professional members, has opened at Gallery 50 in Traverse City, Michigan. It's a wonderful exhibit in an old state hospital that has been and continues to be renovated for retail, office and residential spaces. The setting is pleasing as with the brick walls as the background for the art quilts. The exhibit is representative of the work of a diverse yet professional group of quilt artists with each artist submitting up to three works. Michigan members with artworks in this show include Kathie Briggs, Joan Potter-Thomas, and Desiree Vaughn. If you are in the Traverse City area this September and October, stop in to Gallery 50 (www.galleryfifty.com) and enjoy the exhibit. Here are just a peak at 3 of the pieces in the exhibit.
