Happy New Year - Happy New Prize

We're starting a new year but continuing an old tradition -- well, not that old: Mary Andrews and Robbie Payne started these give-away contests in 2010. Laurie and I intend to continue them in 2012, but with a twist.

First, here's the gift: the catalog of "Beyond Comfort", a SAQA exhibit from 2010.

This exhibit is best described in the words of the curator, Eileen Doughty: "SAQA encouraged its members to create radical art - art which departed from their own body of work. The theme called for fresh, adventurous work, work that may have been rejected from other exhibitions because it was so radical it could not have fit into a cohesive exhibition. In 'Beyond Comfort', radicalism provides its own cohesion."

The exhibit catalog contains 64 pages, softcover. A color photo of each artwork is accompanied by the artist's statement about the piece. The curator's statement by Eileen Doughty and the juror's statement by Marci Rae McDade are also included.

To add this catalog to your library, leave a comment (on this post only) and you will be entered in a drawing to win a copy of "Beyond Comfort".

BUT (here's the twist) not just any comment. Since it's a new year, tell us your new year's resolution relating to fiber art. You can keep it simple: "Work in a larger format"; "enter a SAQA exhibit"; "take a drawing class"; "master free-motion quilting"; or (my personal resolution) "finish something!"

You can enter more than once but be sure to leave your email address (in addition to your name) if you don't have a blog or website that provides your email. You have until Sunday, February 12, at midnight. The winner will be announced on February 14. This could be your Valentine's Day present to yourself.

Good luck!

  4. For quite a while I've been thinking about starting a Monroe area fiber design group. This past Monday I helped launch and moderate a design study group at Monroe's new quilt and yarn shop, Lake Erie Mercantile. As a collaborative ideas membership it's open to anyone with design interests of any level and any medium. Seven attended the first meeting. A poll was taken and color was the major issue for most, so we decided to make that our first focus of study. There's no pressure to contribute or produce although we encourage any sharing of ideas, experiences, and any show and tell. We'll be meeting at the store the third Monday of the month at 10:30am. We're going to alternate months with a discussion group and the next a demo, hands-on or fee-based workshop at the shop. The next meeting will be Monday, February 20th at 10:30. No membership fee. For our next meeting we'll bring ideas, talk about resource materials and work out our study agenda calendar. My resolution: sharing ideas and encouraging folks. Marilyn Prucka

    1. Sounds great Marilyn. I started a group her in Charlevoix at the library 3 years ago last November. No dues, no rules! We had a few growing pains but now have an active vibrant group. We have attracted some non-fiber artists who had an interest in fiber but didn't want to do traditional quilts. We have had two very well received shows and our members have really grown in their artistic expression. We are planning another show for the summer of 2014. Best of luck, I hope your group grows & thrives.

  5. another of my 2012 goals to set aside studio time for just art quilts versus functional quilts

  6. My goal is to spend more time at my quilt work table and less in front of the TV. But, first I have to reclaim my space from my 25 year daughter who has moved back in to her old bedroom which, had turned into my studio.
